Red flag on a white sand beach by the Caribbean Sea

Cancún beaches from downtown

From downtown Cancún, the beaches are in the Hotel Zone. City buses along Avenida Tulum (such as R-1 and R-2) go there; a taxi is quicker and easier with children or bags. Here are four public beaches, with the distances published by Hotel Plaza Kokai.

Playa Las Perlas (5 km)

The closest to downtown. Small and quiet, with usually calm water, as it faces the bay towards Isla Mujeres. Good for a quick swim or with kids.

Playa Tortugas (7 km)

A busy beach with a pier where ferries leave for Isla Mujeres. Handy if you want to combine beach time with a trip to the island.

Playa Caracol (8 km)

Near Punta Cancún, where the Hotel Zone turns south. White sand, clear water and more services around.

Playa Delfines (10 km)

The most open to the Caribbean, with the lookout point and the Cancún sign. Stunning views, but stronger waves: always check the flags.

Beach day tips

  • Check the flag before swimming and follow the lifeguards.
  • Use biodegradable sunscreen and drink water often.
  • Leave valuables in your in-room safe.
  • Check the bus route back before it gets dark.

Isla Mujeres

For more sea, Isla Mujeres is reached by ferry from Playa Tortugas or from Puerto Juárez, north of downtown. More ideas in things to do.
